Conditional phosphorus index as an educational tool for risk assessment and phosphorus management

Article Abstract:

The structure and concepts of conditional phosphorus index (PI), developed as an educational and P-management tool adjusted for the Swedish conditions are presented. The performance of the tool was tested by comparing the calculated PI values with measured annual P transport from seven observation fields, indicating that the tool could be used successfully for P loss risk assessment.

Possibilities for improving nitrogen use from organic materials in agricultural cropping systems

Article Abstract:

Different ways to affect nitrogen (N) release through manipulation of the chemical composition of fresh or pretreated plant materials and animal manures, and timing of incorporation are discussed. An overview of off-farm options is provided that may need to be implemented to achieve improved use of N, especially in agricultural systems with surplus N.
