Deforestation control in Mato Grosso: a new model for slowing the loss of Brazil's Amazon forest

Article Abstract:

Since 1970s there has been a fast rate of deforestation in the Brazilian area due to the coming up of the highways, thus the government has issued a licensing and enforcement program for clearing up larger farmers and ranchers in the state of Mato Grosso. The events in Mato Grosso show that with proper action the slowing process of deforestation can take place.

Organic mercury levels among the Yanomama of the Brazilian Amazon basin

Article Abstract:

The Catrimani River basin which is the home of the Yanomama and the site for gold mining, which releases inorganic mercury (Hg), which contaminates the water and poses a threat to aquatic life is described. On a comparison with other unmined villages the contamination level, which was much higher, is presented.

Spatial and temporal patterns of Amazon rainfall: consequences for the planning of agricultural occupation and the protection of primary forests

Article Abstract:

Research is presented on rainfall in Brazil's Amazon region, along with a discussion of environmental policy planning based on this data. Topics include carbon storage, biomass productivity, timber volume, forest fires and recuperation, soil moisture, and the impact of El Nino occurrences.
