Under surveillance

Article Abstract:

There are currently mixed views about the use of closed circuit television (CCTV) systems in urban areas. This approach may reduce crime in the areas covered, but the crime may simply be shifted elsewhere, according to a report from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Surveillance of public spaces may make them less democratic, as judgements may be made about who should be allowed to enter them. It is important to look at other ways of reducing crime too, including changes in housing and transport policies.

Derivation of mean cell residence time formula

Article Abstract:

Nicolas G. Adrien derived a formula for the solids retention time. The formula gave the mean cell residence time of activated sludge processes as the ratio of the biomass in a system divided by the rate of daily biomass removal. However, it failed to take microbial reproduction into consideration which led to the wrong result. By adapting the hydraulic retention time of tanks with recycle flows, the correct formula can be derived.

Funkmanship

Article Abstract:

Pres. Bill Clinton had difficulty explaining his usage of the word 'funk' to reporters. It is a slang term from the 1600's meaning 'smelly' due to the burning of tobacco. Later by the 1700s it also meant to be fearful as in a 'blue funk.' Clinton decided to use the word 'malaise' the next time.
