Dispersal behaviour of individuals in metapopulations of two British butterflies

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that homing behavior in butterflies is linked to their familiarity with suitable habitat traits, rather than their preference for a familiar location. Familiarity with a given area fosters recognition of preferred habitat characteristics. Data were obtained from the butterfly species Pyronia tithonus and Maniola jurtina.

Spatial occurrence and colonisations in patch-tracking metapopulations: local conditions versus dispersal

Article Abstract:

The relative importance of local variables and dispersal for the occurrence and colonization of the epiphytic bryophytes Orthotricum speciosum (spores dispersed) and Orthotricum obtusifolium (spore and asexual gemmae) on aspen trees is investigated. The epiphyte-tree system is described in the patch-tracking metapopulation model.

Cumulative reproduction and survival costs in female red deer

Article Abstract:

A dataset of female red deer (Cervus elaphus) from the Isle of Rum, Scotland, is used to examine the cumulative costs of frequent reproduction on survival. The results have emphasized on the necessity to account for reproductive history when estimating the survival probabilities of animals.
