Temporal variation in fitness components and population dynamics of large herbivores

Article Abstract:

Research suggests that temporal variation may be a more important factor than estimated relative elasticity or sensitivity in determining the demographic impact of a variety of fitness components. Studies are based on ungulate females and juveniles, with adult female survival demonstrating nominal variation and juvenile female survival/fecundity showing strong variation.

Development threats to biodiversity and opportunities for conservation in the mountain ranges of the Upper Bermejo River Basin, NW Argentina and SW Bolivia

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that logging, gas and oil prospecting and agricultural expansion are threatening biodiversity in the Upper Bermejo River Basin, which spans both Bolivia and Argentina. Proposed conservation strategies include promoting sustainable uses, protecting sensitive areas not already within reserve boundaries, and maintaining the forest matrix.

The ecology of tropical Asian rivers and streams in relation to biodiversity conservation

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on threats to riverine biodiversity in tropical Asian regions, such as deforestation, pollution, over-harvesting, dams, and flow regulation. Proposed solutions to these threats include improved public education on environmental issues and increased political commitment to conservation efforts and legal protections.
