Modeling epiphyte metapopulation dynamics in a dynamic forest landscape

Article Abstract:

The simulations are combined with spatial statistics to estimate the parameters of a metapopulation model for the epiphytic lichen 'Lobaria pulmonaria' specializing on aspen and goat willow in Fennoscandian boreal old-growth forests. Results found that Lobaria pulmonaria has an occupancy peak but is predicted to go extinct from the reserve due to low colonization rate caused by falling number of occupied host trees and increasing distances to unoccupied host trees.

Population fluctuations, regulation and limitation in stream-living brown trout

Article Abstract:

Population fluctuations, regulation and limitation in stream-living brown trout were studied by a model of population dynamics. It was seen that density-dependent and density-independent processes can act together on population density and stability at equilibrium and that the effects of internal feedbacks regulating population may often be invisible when analyzing abundance fluctuations at the interannual scale.

Larch- and pine-feeding host races of the larch bud moth (Zeiraphera diniana) have cyclic and synchronous population fluctuations

Article Abstract:

The larch budmoth (LBM) larval density on Swiss stone pine is measured and its annual variation is assessed over a consequent time period. The results have not provided any explanation for cyclic fluctuations of LBM on pine, but it has represented a first comparison of population dynamics between two genetically differentiated host races.
