Competition between Eurasian otter Lutra lutra and American mink Mustela vision probed by niche shift

Article Abstract:

Investigators compared the diets and densities of American mink and Eurasian otter at two points in time, in the mid-seventies and late nineties, at a single location on the river Teign. Results suggest that mink should be able to coexist for longer with the otter in areas where there are abundant alternative prey species that are not exploited by its competitor.

Growth in otter (Lutra lutra) populations in the UK as shown by long-term monitoring

Article Abstract:

Long-term monitoring (from 1977) in three catchments in western Britain that were recolonized naturally and in two catchments in eastern England that were reinforced by captive-bred otters is reported. A strategy for annual monitoring of otters is recommended.
