Environmental influence and cohort effects in a sexual ornament in the house sparrow, Passer domesticus

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to examine whether environmental influence and cohort effects in a sexual ornament of male house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is independent on individual variation in the conditions during early ontogenic stages and later life. It is found that badge-size is an environmentally dependent trait in house sparrows and likely to be under the influence of both natural and sexual selection.

The devil lies in details: reply to Stuart Hurlbert

Article Abstract:

A response is provided for Stuart Hurlbert's reply, emphasizing on the misconceptions of the logical equivalence between compound treatments and pseudoreplication. Guidelines are proposed for discarding the counterproductive aspects of Hulbert's propositions without going back to the real problems, which were present in the ecological literatures before 1984 and which are still present.

Dynamics of an immune response in house sparrows Passer domesticus in relation to time of day, body condition and blood parasite infection

Article Abstract:

The temporal dynamics of the T-cell mediated response in house sparrows Passer domesticus for the determination of factors contributing to temporal and individual variation in phytohemagglutinin (PHA) response are investigated. The inability of infected individuals with large fluctuations in mass to mount a strong immune response is discussed.
