Some roles for North American ecologists in land-use planning in the tropics

Article Abstract:

Suggestions are presented for conservation planning in less developed countries, as a response to guidelines produced by the Ecological Society of America. These include partnerships between scientists from both developed and developing nations; collaborations between ecologists, sociologists and economists; and the acceptance of local expertise along with academic theory.

The application of ecological principles to urban and urbanizing landscapes

Article Abstract:

Recommended categories are presented for conservation and land-use planning which incorporate the human-ecosystem dynamic. These include connectivity, or spatial and functional continuity; heterogeneity, or the temporal and spatial distribution of habitat patches within a landscape; and context, or a patch's location within a landscape and the resultant interactions.

ESA report: ecological principles and guidelines for managing the use of land

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the Ecological Society of America's conservation land-use recommendations. These include implementing strategies that are compatible with a region's natural potential, avoiding uses that will deplete natural resources, preventing habitat fragmentation, and preserving rare landscape characteristics along with associated species.
