Government plans and farmers intentions: A study on forest land use planning in Vietnam

Article Abstract:

The objectives and strategies of Vietnamese government and farmers in one commune and one village are described and how planning data influence scenarios on future development is analyzed. In the commune and village studied, it would be difficult for the Five Million Hectare Reforestation Program to materialize as most of the forest land officially not used, is actually used for food production.

Assessment of historical land-use changes for purposes of strategic planning - a case study in Laos

Article Abstract:

A water catchment in Laos is used to illustrate sustainable development practices involving interaction among stakeholders. The method incorporates historical events, environmental conditions, and socioeconomic issues as related by interviews with local residents, which are then paired with data obtained from official records, remote sensing and field point sampling to produce management plans.

An overview is presented on citizen participation in the creation of Colombia's environmental management policies for the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, located on the Caribbean coast. Topics include holistic approaches, the linking of religious beliefs with management practices, and the concept of stewardship.
