Impacts of airborne pollutants on soil fauna

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that air pollution affects soil-living animals both directly and indirectly. Direct effects include the ingestion of free acidic water and contaminated food, while indirect effects include the reduction or disappearance of food resources and microclimate alteration; a discussion is also presented on the use of soil-living animals as environmental indicators.

The effect of landscape features on deposition to Hunter Mountain, Catskill Mountains, New York

Article Abstract:

Studies indicate that landscape characteristics play a prominent role in the prediction of air pollution deposition effects. Research shows that deposition hotspots are typically found in coniferous forest-edge regions at higher elevations, where atmospheric deposition levels can be 300% greater than at lower elevations.

Harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex spp.): their community and ecosystem influences

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on the contributions of harvester ants to their surrounding environments. These include improved soil conditions through digging, competition with other granivores, their role in seed dispersal, and differential seed predation.
