Integrating biological, socioeconomic, and managerial methods and results in the MAB mushroom study

Article Abstract:

Studies on mushroom harvesting for Washington state's Olympic Peninsula have yielded important information on creating sustainable development policies. Harvesters face a variety of difficulties such as low market prices and vandalism of equipment, but they also contribute to environmental degradation through illegal waste dumping and excessive exploitation. Successful policies should incorporate input from all interested parties, including harvesters and environmentalists.

Biological productivity of chanterelle mushrooms in and near the Olympic Peninsula Biosphere Reserve

Article Abstract:

Ongoing environmental research is contributing to sustainable development policies for the Olympic Peninsula Biosphere Reserve in Washington state. Increased commercial harvesting of edible mushrooms has prompted the research. Findings include the temporal and spatial requirements to enhance unit-area productivity and weather conditions needed for mushroom moisture contents. These findings are expected to enhance mushroom production.

The MAB mushroom study: background and concerns

Article Abstract:

The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program has established research procedures to address environmental concerns regarding mushroom harvesting in Washington state. Study objectives include gathering data on temporal and spatial mushroom productivity for two harvest seasons, building harvester socioeconomic profiles, and determining links between environmental and socioeconomic interests to create sustainable development policies.
