Investment in the aquatic enviornment II: Comparison of two techniques for evaluating environmental benefits

Article Abstract:

The Foundation for Water Research (FWR) manual is aimed at helping personnel in the water industry and regulatory industries fulfill surface water quality improvements in a consistent way. However the manual concentrates on demand-side factors affecting the anthropogenic use of the aquatic environment to assess possible benefits, but supply-side factors are also significant. Two methodologies to evaluate the environmental benefits of investing in the aquatic environment were applied to a range of nine case studies. The results indicate a wider consideration of demand and supply-side factors provided by the marketing-based approach.

Investment in the aquatic environment I: A marketing-based approach

Article Abstract:

It is recognized that integrating environmental considerations into economic analysis is important. In the UK the government outlined its aim to address the issue in This Common Inheritance. There are several benefit assessment techniques to aid investment appraisal in relation to the aquatic environment. A broadly-based marketing approach is considered which may target investment on the aquatic environment more effectively.
