MIRABEL: Models for Integrated Review and Assessment of Biodiversity in European Landscapes

Article Abstract:

A description is presented on the integrating conceptual framework MIRABEL, or Models for Integrated Review and Assessment of Biodiversity in European Landscapes, used to analyze the effects of environmental change on biodiversity. MIRABEL calculates changes in threatened habitats using 10 environmental pressures for 28 European nations; results indicate that agricultural intensification is one of the primary environmental pressures that threaten habitats.

Nitrate in soil profiles and nitrate pollution of drinking water in the loess region of China

Article Abstract:

Heavy use of nitrogen fertilizers in the Shaanxi Province of China is resulting in contamination of the region's water supply. Although the fertilizers have significantly raised agricultural production, soil water nitrate concentrations have become unacceptably high. Since much of the region's land is steeply sloped, these concentrations are higher in valley bottoms than on hilltops and the uppermost steppes.

Responses of a saline lake ecosystem in a semiarid region to irrigation and climate variability: the history of Salada Chiprana, Central Ebro Basin, Spain

Article Abstract:

Sediment cores from Spain's Salada Chiprana saline lake were analyzed using geochemical, sedimentological, pollen, charcoal and radiometric dating methods. Results indicate that the lake was formed from extensive and lengthy human interaction with the landscape, such as irrigation and agricultural uses.
