Raising an army with demoralised officers

Article Abstract:

The wages budget for staff in further education colleges will not be able to be reduced any further, in order to pay for the proposed 400,000 additional student places. A study found that 50% of lecturers earned between 20,000-24,999 pounds sterling. Staff development is not well financed, with 0.33%-2% of income spent on staff training. Teaching staff have also faced the loss of 15,000 full-time posts between 1993-1997. Around 50% of staff, in some colleges, are part-time workers. Some education experts suggest that changes to employment structures may result in declining standards.

Mathematical constraints on transition matrix elasticity analysis

Article Abstract:

The mathematical properties of matrix models have important consequences for their use in biological systems. The elasticities of plant growth are not related to the biology of the species. The fecundity elasticities, on the other hand, are bound to be smaller than the greatest growth elasticity. Thus, sensitivities would be a better parameter for comparing the influence of changing demographics on plants. Lastly, the dependence of a plant species in the growth-survival-fecundity triangle on the dimension of the transition matrix may be qualitatively studied for these matrices.
