Defining the components of fairness in the allocation of water to environmental and human uses

Article Abstract:

Water allocation has become increasingly controversial in many countries as competition increases. A research programme of studies covering 10 years of water allocation decisions is summarized, with much of the research undertaken in the context of the development of government sponsored water reform in Australia. The research shows that self-interest is tempered by pro-social motivations in water-allocation decisions.
