Effects of cutting on the growth of Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) in hedges

Article Abstract:

Total shoot length of Crataegus monogyna is unaffected by the position and timing of cutting in newly-planted hedges. Two types of cutting, vertical or horizontal, are done in either summer or winter. A combination of both types of cutting produces a tall hedge with bud-tipped shoots. The timing of the cut is an important factor which interacts with the type of cut, to produce different results. Different management types of hedges, are characterized by different growth parameters. Hedges are best rejuvenated by gapping up with young plants.
