Mobile scavengers create hotspots of freshwater productivity

Article Abstract:

The way in which gulls, by transporting salmon tissues to their chicks, create hotspots of biological productivity in the aquatic habitats surrounding their nesting colonies is examined. The study has presented evidence that glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) redistribute and concentrate salmon-derived nutrients into freshwater areas surrounding nesting islands in an Alaskan lake and has shown that these subsidies subsequently enrich three trophic levels of the nearshore food webs.

Eradication of invasive Tamarix ramosissima along a desert stream increases native fish density

Article Abstract:

The spring ecosystems of the western United States that have high conservation value due to a highly endemic and often endangered fauna they support are described. It was felt that eradicating saltcedar from spring ecosystems of the western United States should clearly be a management priority.
