Model development

Article Abstract:

A deterministic linear programming model for regional solid waste system scheduling is presented. The approach provides a solution to a hypothetical problem through a long-term planning of disposal and diversion options for solid waste management. However, before the proposed approach can be used, some factors need to be addressed. The proposed model does not provide an alternative waste diversion program and regional models can be used only for one time period.

Municipal landfill biodegradation and settlement

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted on the mechanisms of land settlement, with focus on the relationship to waste biodegradation. Results indicate that landfill stabilization techniques can be better evaluated by considering total settlement behavior, instead of dividing settlement into primary and secondary components. Landfill stabilization may be hastened by applying the biodigester concept, which includes moisture and recirculation of leachate.

Optimal scheduling of consecutive landfill operations with recycling

Article Abstract:

A discussion and reply to a discussion on the optimal scheduling of consecutive landfill operations with recycling is presented. The discussion favorably criticizes several points such as the reductions in recycling level, variation in per-ton cost of landfill disposal with landfill lifetime, and time. The reply acknowledges the criticisms and accepts the modifications made to the formulae on the preceding topics.
