Pesticide residues in rivers of a Brazilian rain forest reserve: assessing potential concern for effects on aquatic life and human health

Article Abstract:

Pesticide residue measurements were taken from Brazil's Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Ribeira, a rain forest reserve, between 1998 and 2000. Several pesticide levels found in water samples were above safe drinking water standards recommended by either the European Union and/or the Brazilian government, emphasizing environmental and health concerns.

Tropical forests can suffer from a serious deficiency of calcium after logging

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that timber harvesting can cause a significant depletion of soil calcium content due to the loss of logs and other biomass. Data are obtained from a forest region in Sabah, Malaysia, in which the removal of stem wood and bark resulted in a nearly 19% decrease in ecosystem calcium down to a soil depth of 50 cm.

Organizing for sustainable development: conservation organizations and the struggle to protect tropical rain forests in Esmeraldas, Ecuador

Article Abstract:

Ecuador's two-sided approach to rain forest conservation has yielded successes in slowing deforestation and achieving sustainable development goals. The approach consists of instruction and implementation of sustainable forestry techniques, and the establishment of a public forum for discussing relevant issues.
