Prediction of deep-bed-filter performance using recursive algorithms

Article Abstract:

Recursive algorithms may be used in place of theoretical models for predicting the performance of deep-bed filters, particularly the temporal variations of the filter effluent concentration and associated head loss. A number of experiments should be conducted before reliable recursive relationships can be derived. Caution should be exercised to prevent experiment errors which may affect parameter derivation.

Mud volcanoes of the Marianas

Article Abstract:

Studies of seamounts in the Mariana Trench of the Pacific Ocean show unusual formations and composition. The seamounts were probably created when geologic plates collided and released fluid that formed mountains similar to mud volcanoes.

Weather's unseen power

Article Abstract:

Biometeorology pertains to the study of the weather's effect on living things. Although it remains a neglected discipline in the US, biometeorological research is currently conducted in Sweden, Japan, Russia and Germany.
