Providing new environmental skills for British farmers

Article Abstract:

Farmers in the UK must develop new farming skills as new environmental policies in agriculture start to emerge. The Agricultural Knowledge Network (AKN), the source of information, education, training and advice of farmers, is thus challenged to address this growing need of British farmers. However, the AKN is too market- and production-oriented to be able to provide farmers with efficient environmental skills. The AKN must then be better coordinated and have a clearer approach to quality control to be able to improve British farmers' ability to adapt to the environmental side of agricultural policy.

Environmental decision-making and lake management

Article Abstract:

Management of the water quality in Lake Ellesmere, New Zealand provides a case study for environmental decision making. Two aspects of a good decision are efficiency, measured in terms of good process, and effectiveness, measured in terms of outcomes. Decision support systems enable complex decision-making. Application of a decision support system to Ellesmere revealed that using informal soft systems of management can help decision-makers and managers.
