Eight-week rule on the way out

Article Abstract:

A report is critical of the eight-week period allowed for determing planning applications in the United Kingdom. The efficiency of local planning authorities is calculated from a target of 80% of planning applications being processed within eight weeks. The Audit Commission considers the time limit generous for small applications and ridiculous for major projects. It discourages negotiation and is open to abuse. There should be a more use of design guides and informal discussion, less time spent on administration and more time on consultation and enforcement.

Return to Amchitka

Article Abstract:

Repeated nuclear tests have adversely affected the environment and wildlife of the island of Amchitka in the Aleutians. The US Atomic Energy Commission conducted the third and most disastrous test, Cannikin, in Amchitka despite widespread public protests. A few peace activists with Jim Bohlen as their leader formed Greenpeace to protest against the tests. Although they failed to stop the test, they aroused widespread public protest. The test site is still contaminated, exposing both humans and animals to many risks.
