Rio - a real emergency for our planet

Article Abstract:

The June 1-12 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro is an event that will confront, in the spirit of urgency, two of the world's biggest challenges - environment and development. It was forecasted that three billion more people have to be fed by a beleaguered natural resource base by the year 2025 (Bois-le-Duc Declaration, 1991). Hence, the need for improved and environment-oriented farming practices. The Rio summit will therefore focus on the responsibility of governments and other sectors of society to ensure that the earth would still be a liveable place a century or so from now.

A real standout

Article Abstract:

A Greenpeace toxics campaigner, Angela Brown was honored with the 1995 Reebok International Human Rights Award for her contributions as a student and youth organizer against environmental injustice. As a mobilizing youth since the age of 13, she founded the Leadership Initiative Project to promote youth leadership and fight discrimination in academics in North Carolina schools. Brown believes that environmental racism is a human rights issue and draws attention towards chemically induced health problems. She is currently working with the Youth Task Force for the blacks.

After the Earth Summit

Article Abstract:

The majority ofrepresentatives of around 300 non-governmental organizations along with the principal organizer of the June 1992 United Nations Conference on the Environnment and Development were disappointed by the general outcome of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. They claimed that the conference ended without sufficient outcome, alledging that the more prosperous countries did not pledgeenough funds to facilitate the plan of action. In addition, they assailed that vital measures concerning the safety of the planet were not embodied in any of the agreements.
