Running against the tide

Article Abstract:

The advent of economic reforms in Poland has wrought damaging effects on the farmers. The country's shift to a free market economic system presented mounting problems tothe farming sector such as depressed commodity prices, uncertain market, high inflation rates, withhdrawal of farm subsidies and new, tough competition from foreign food imports. Such unfavorable economic condition of the farming industry has posed a grave threat to Poland's agricultural productivity.

"Thousands of family farmers will become casualties to this adjustment." (GATT unfavorable to farmers)

Article Abstract:

The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) seeks economic profitability over human and animal environmental health aspects and is unconcerned about the interests of farmers. Supply management boards, which determine the farm prices on a cost of production basis, have been excluded from decision making in GATT, and transnational organizations dictate the prices to suit their commercial interests.

"A major step in a good direction...." (GATT will benefit farmers)

Article Abstract:

The revised agricultural trade policy of General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) will give equal opportunities for agricultural farmers world-wide and the introduction of tariffs and the reduction in export subsidies is a right decision. The new policy seeks to upgrade agricultural machinery, provide funding for research activities and generate aid for local agricultural programs.
