Sediment evidence of early eutrophication and heavy metal pollution of Lake Malaren, central Sweden

Article Abstract:

Core sampling of sediments from Sweden's Malaren lake indicates that contamination of the lake began much earlier than previously thought, originating with industrial metal production and processing in the 19th century. Research shows that lead pollution of Malaren has been significantly reduced following the closure of nearby metal and mining operations.

Mercury pollution trends in subarctic lakes in the northern Swedish mountains

Article Abstract:

The sediments from 12 lakes located above the Arctic Circle in the Swedish mountains are used for assessing the past and recent mercury pollution situation. The analysis has shown that since 1990s mercury concentration has reduced in 8 of the 12 lakes, which is similar to emission trends in Europe.

Article Abstract:

Atmospheric lead polluton in Sweden has been traced back some 3,500-4,000 years. Although pollution was present as early as 2000 BC, it reached its peak around 1970, and then began to decline.
