Sustainable management of natural resources in African and Asian mountains

Article Abstract:

Several management strategies are presented for the environmentally conscious use of natural resources in the mountains of Asia and Africa. These include a shift from subsistence farming to secondary and/or tertiary sectors, the application of appropriate technologies, and the exchange of information from other countries with successful sustainable development policies.

Are Pyrodinium blooms in the southeast Asian region recurring and spreading? A view at the end of the millennium

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the destructiveness of Pyrodinium bahamense, a dinoflagellate species that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, and its impact on the Asian fish and aquaculture industries. Descriptive and predictive models of Pyrodinium blooms may help prevent the tainting of seafood harvests, and protect marine ecosystems and the public health.

Water-related problems of Central Asia: some results of the (GIWA) international water assessment program

Article Abstract:

The results of the research under the program Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA) for the Aral Sea basin (Subregion 24 of the GIWA program) are presented. According to GIWA assessment estimations, freshwater shortage is responsible for about 70% of development problems in the region.
