The academy and the profession

Article Abstract:

There is a growing concern among civil and environmental engineers about the need to modify the engineering educational system to better prepare new graduates for the actual workplace. A concerted effort must come from both the academy and professional organizations to improve the knowledge and skills of students. The curricula need to be more design-oriented rather than theory-oriented by incorporating the latest technological developments and welcoming input from practitioners.

Specialist or generalist at the undergraduate level

Article Abstract:

Experts express their concern over the present environmental engineering education's capacity to address such issues as waste minimization, pollution control and prevention in the manufacturing industry. Civil and environmental engineering curriculum should be expanded to include courses in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Undergraduate programs should also promote greater specialization to allow engineers to fully utilize current and future technologies.

Challenges for environmental engineers in manufacturing industries

Article Abstract:

Majority of the environmental-related positions in the corporate and manufacturing-plant levels are being offered to mechanical or chemical engineering graduates as opposed to environmental engineers. This can be remedied through various measures. The need of environmental engineers for information on the manufacturing processes can be remedied by modifying traditional environmental engineering curriculum.
