Trends in the types, amounts, and toxicity of pesticides used in Tanzania

Article Abstract:

Pesticide use in Tanzania increased 140% from 1977 to 1988. Use, formulation, and control of these highly toxic substances is inefficient. The Plant Protection Department and the Ministry of Agriculture have worked since 1988 to encourage a more organic form of agriculture, partly by removing government subsidies for agrochemicals. Thirteen tons of pesticides were used in 1990, decreasing to approximately 2 tons in 1995.

Wave-induced net circulation in a reef fringed lagoon: Bamburi, Kenya

Article Abstract:

Water circulation through a lagoon in Kenya is primarily driven, according to an analytical model, by continuous pumping of water over the coral reef and its exit through various channels. The fringing reef acts as a barrier when exposed during low water spring, and the lagoon water exchange is influenced by additional factors including characteristics of the incoming swell, reef-bottom friction, and pressure head.

Men, women and natural resources in Kwale District, Kenya

Article Abstract:

Culturally-defined roles control how men and women in the Kwale District of Kenya interact with local mangrove forests. Men work to commercially produce mangrove poles and fish, while women domestically exploit mangrove resources. These are not inflexible assignments, and may change when technological innovations and revised licensing systems are introduced into this area.
