Use of rehabilitation experiments to understand the recovery dynamics of acid-stressed fish populations

Article Abstract:

Reestablishment rates of two native fish species, lake trout and smallmouth bass, are compared in stocking experiments at lakes in Ontario, Canada's Killarney Park. Lake trout were found to recover at significantly slower rates than smallmouth bass; implications for cold-water and warm-water fish species management are discussed.

Recolonization of acid-damaged lakes by the benthic invertebrates Stenacron interpunctatum, Stenonema femoratum and Hyalella azteca

Article Abstract:

The article examines recovery times for two mayfly species and an amphipod in Ontario, Canada's Killarney Park lakes. The time difference between water pH recovery and reestablishment of invertebrate communities is projected at between 11 and 22 years.

Liming of River Audna, southern Norway: a large-scale experiment of benthic invertebrate recovery

Article Abstract:

Norway's River Audna was limed in an effort to correct water pH levels and remove labile aluminum. Limed regions of the river produced dramatic recovery of invertebrate populations including Baetis rhodani and Lymnaea peregra.
