Variation in top-down control of avian reproductive success across a fragmentation gradient

Article Abstract:

The strength of top-down forces in a landscape varies according to characteristics of prey and predator and autecological responses to ecological gradients. In a sage scrub habitat, snake abundance proved to be the most reliable predictor of nest failure in ground-nesting species, while dispersal or differential survivorship may account for reduced abundance in ground-nesting species.

Keystone predator effects and grazer control of planktonic primary production

Article Abstract:

A model aquatic system with zooplankton established as the top consumer and various algae as prey, has shown predation as dominated by edible forms in the algal biomass. Smaller-sized algae grew more quickly but were more susceptible to grazing factors, while larger algae were more protected from grazing but grew more slowly.

Ecological traps in isodars: Effects of tallgrass prairie management on bird nest success

Article Abstract:

A graphical model based on isodar theory to distinguish between an ideal distribution and an ecological trap is developed. It is concluded that isodar theory is a useful tool for detecting ecological traps if any component of fitness is measured in addition to animal densities.
