Viewpoint: creating a labor strategy

Environmental organizations must encourage the involvement of labor unions and minority industrial workers in their efforts to fight industrial pollution. Workers are concerned about health and safety issues, especially as they are related to the production of toxic chemicals.

Meet the labor movement

Environmentalists should be persistent when trying to establish a relationship with a labor union. Some union leaders may not represent the consensus of their unions. Union reformers can be worthwhile contacts, as some include environmental issues in their agendas.

Viewpoint: confronting corporate power

A $300 billion annual fund would help to preserve jobs while protecting the environment. The fund should be controlled by laborers and communities, and it would be used for changing production methods and retraining laborers.
