Where do we go from here?: comments on equal opportunity and equality in environmental engineering

Article Abstract:

A number of topics which center on equal opportunity and equality in the field of environmental engineering are discussed. The most controversial issue is the concept of affirmative action. Opponents of affirmative action say that it lowers standards for admission, employment and promotion for a minority and makes minorities feel inadequate and inferior because they are selected not because of qualification or ability. It is suggested that one way to approach the problem is through education and by persuading minorities to become interested in the field of environmental engineering.

Environmental engineers and environmental science: comparative approaches in practice, research, and education

Article Abstract:

Responses to an on-line discussion forum indicate that the field of environmental engineering is clearly distinct from that of environmental science. However, responses also show that the two disciplines have two comparative aspects. The first is that educational support for both disciplines should be designed to maintain the distinctions of their objectives. The second concerns the benefits of having cross-talk and cross-fertilization between the two disciplines.
