Why does herbivore sex matter? Sexual differences in utilization of Fucus vesiculosus by the isopod Idotea baltica

Article Abstract:

A comparison of marine isopod feeding behavior is presented between males and females of the Idotea baltica species and their Fucus vesiculosus foraging habits. Males that fed strictly from the basal part of F. vesiculosus performed more poorly than their apical-feeding counterparts, while females survive well on both parts of the alga.

Induction of phlorotannin production in a brown alga: defense or resource dynamics?

Article Abstract:

The inducement of changes by snail grazing in phlorotannin concentration and growth of the brown alga, Fucus vesiculosus, is examined. The amount of genetic variation in phlorotannin production is investigated.

Macroalgal communities face the challenge of changing biotic interactions: Review with focus on the Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

Studies to analyze and examine the effects of eutrophication on the modification of the biotic interactions in the littoral macroalgal communities in the Baltic Sea were conducted. The analysis reveals that the biotic interactions, instead of remaining fixed keep evolving, which also reveals that the potential of plants and grazers to adapt is very crucial for their survival in the changing environment.
