Composters, wood grinders find expansion opportunities

County Conservation in Sewell, NJ, receives around 100,00 cubic yards a year of organic material. It devotes 14 acres of its 21-acre site to composting. Other composting firms are also profiled.

Multiple sites yield multiple products

Article Abstract:

Sun-Up Forest Products of Sacramento, CA, is one of the leading wood by-product concerns in California. It has three sites involved in producing and distributing decorative bark, planter mixes, compost, potting soils and soil conditioners. It has entered into a partnership to recycle cedar shake shingles, which are ground into fine material for soil amendments and into coarse material for topdressings. It is now using yard trimmings compost more frequently, and plans to purchase a tub grinder shortly to facilitate composting.

A composter who knows his markets: Years of preparation lead to a profitable company in New Mexico that handles diverse feedstocks, and expands compost use for erosion control

Article Abstract:

Soilutions was incorporate as a company by Jim Brooks and his wife Karen in 1996, in the South Valley area of Bernalillo County. The company started composting on a small scale during the first few years, and it expects to produce around 1,000 cubic yards of compost in 1999. Its activities also include vermicomposting, erosion control and planting and the manufacture of potting soil blends. The company accepts a wide variety of organics such as gras clippings, leaves, brush, hay and straw and weeds.
