Analyzing the costs of composting strategies: A recent EPA report first estimates quantities of compostables in the MSW stream, then runs through various composting strategies to determine a cost/ton basis for diversion through each method

Article Abstract:

The Organic Materials Management Strategies (OMMS) report released by the US Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Solid Waste, explores the potential for implementing composting strategies, such as home composting, grasscycling and institutional composting. A cost/ton was determined for each method, emphasizing the impact that proven strategies would have on reduction in the US waste stream.
