Backyard composting for source reduction

Article Abstract:

Pinellas County, FL, attributes the success of its composting program to the active participation of its community members. The country launched a demonstration project in Mar. 1995 to encourage community members to shift to recycling as a major approach to solid waste management. The project included training workshops for volunteers who responded to a survey. Although the approach was effective, survey revealed that composting was only successful in the first month and tend to decline in the succeeding months because of the public's diminishing interest.

Composting and agriculture converge

Article Abstract:

Yard trimmings and trash comprise one-fifth of materials sent to landfills. Thus the ban on yard trash in twenty-one states has caused odor and composting problems. One answer to the problem is to convince people to use home composting techniques to reduce trash volume at its source. Compost standards, guidelines and rules are also being implemented in several states. More general public awareness and participation has opened doors for private companies to put up composting facilities for profit. Farmers are also being taught to use organic materials.

Mulch production from yard trash

Article Abstract:

A study made by Pinellas County, FL, produced data on how to make, distribute and use mulch from yard trash. It was discovered that mulch texture and content made it more suitable for soil top dressing than for fertilizer uses. Tests on pathogens, harmful chemicals, destruction of undesirable plant and animal life and metal content were also carried out. Cost considerations were also explored. The data obtained formed bases for improved production and use of yard trash mulch.
