Bioaerosols at a Canadian composting facility

Article Abstract:

A study in the City of Sarnia, Ontario, shows that microorganisms are widespread in an organically-based process. The worker at the composting site encounters a similar risk as workers engaged in earthmoving activities, husbandry, farming and forestry operations. Dust, airborne bacteria and fungi, aspergillus fumigatus, and gram-negative bacteria and endotoxins are potential risks for health. Maintaining a proper composting environment, proper dust-mask procedures and screening out predisposed individuals are useful for prevention.

Software development at a compost facility

Article Abstract:

The Green Lane Environmental Group Ltd. which has opened an enclosed/aerated channel facility in London, Ontario, Canada, uses a standard personal computer to monitor and store data, and automatically print a daily record of the average temperature. The program, which supplies information without much effort, has simplified organizational procedures. In a compost plant, temperature is critical, as it gives an indication of the microbial activity in the plant.

Collecting and composting source separated organics

Article Abstract:

The St Thomas, Ontario, Canada three stream waste diversion program has been going on for three years and has cumulatively reduced residential waste going to landfill by 63 percent. Sorting residential waste into dry, compostable and residual garbage has become a habit for the residents of the city. The success of the program was attributed to continued education efforts through newspaper advertising, contests and telephone hotlines.
