Changing standards to meet emerging threats

Article Abstract:

The new US standard for personal protective equipment NFPA 1971:2007 is compared with the Europe an standard EN 469:2005. The US standard allows for protection against chemical, biologic al, radiological and nuclear ag ents, while the European standard does not. The American standard also benefits from representing only one national interest, as compared to differing national interests in Europe.

The International Association of Fire and Rescue Services, also known by its French acronym CTIF, is pushing for new guidelines to deal with "dirty bombs" and other threats. The association is struggling to influence the European Commission with regards to fire safety regulations. Th e Federation of British Fire Organizations is the national committee of CITF in the UK.

Caribbean chiefs aim for increased efficiency

The Caribbean Association of Chief, Deputy and Assoctant Chief Fire Officers held its 3rd biannual conference in San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic on 4-9 November 2006. Topics discussed include leadership of fire departments and training of firefighters.
