College composting program matures

Article Abstract:

Berea College in Kentucky launched a pilot program in the year 1998 to compost food residuals to generate an organic soil amendment and demonstrate the feasibility of responsible waste management. The program provided educational, research opportunities to students and the community, and has become a fundamental part of the College's garden and greenhouse program, the horticultural component of its 500-acre educational farm.

From landfill to resource development park

The article examines a waste minimization program under development in Coffs Harbour, a city located in New South Wales, Australia. The program is being implemented to reduce the city's dependence on landfill disposal. Waste reduction technologies under consideration include anaerobic digestion, enclosed composting, mechanical separation systems, and gasification.

Digester plant operates at Tel Aviv transfer station

Article Abstract:

A 70,000-ton per year anaerobic digestion plant began operations in early 2003 at Tel Aviv, Israel MSW transfer station. The facility has two components, namely a front-end physical element for separation and preparation purposes, and a back-end biological system with an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) digestion.
