Compost certification successes on both sides of the Atlantic

Article Abstract:

A few key elements of the compost certification program components include involvement, or management, by the "trade" organization that represents the nation's commercial composting industry, compost quality testing and outreach to the marketplace. The similarities and differences between the two programs, namely PAS 100 in the UK and Seal of Testing Assurance in the United States, are discussed.

Composters benefit rooftop gardens, as they are the most popular component of green roof media, which are recognized for their environmental benefits. Green roofs are classified into extensive gardens that use a more shallow layer of growing media while intensive gardens use media over 6 inches in depth.

Commercial composters should understand that the agriculture departments can greatly impact the way they do business. It can be from requiring them to pay tonnage and other registration fees, to creating minimum product standards, to changing the way the products are labeled.
