Compost pelletization eases end use in Nigeria

Article Abstract:

Compost pelletization is used in Nigeria to reduce the volume and increase nutrient retention in compost made from poultry waste. Pelletization reduces problems related to storage and uneconomical transport of conventional compost. The composting process is 12 weeks long, requires water and turnings, temperature monitoring, and analyses of samples. The final compost is air dried, ground, sieved and, finally, passed through a pelletization machine. Compost blended with clay is ideal for pelletization and retains nutrients for a long time.

A simple bin design for managing food residuals

Article Abstract:

The officials of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State in southwestern part of Nigeria, have designed a household food waste collection drum with ability to turn materials for efficient composting in order to make recycling more effective. A survey was conducted on the weekly generation pattern among selected households in Ibadan before designing a suitable composting bin.

Pilot project evaluates source-separated MSW composting

Article Abstract:

The article examines Nigeria's composting techniques for residential yard trimmings and organics, which produce end product used in the country's plantain fields. Raw material is typically comprised of 70-80% garden trimmings and 20-30% kitchen refuse. Test results of various mixtures and moisture percentages are also presented.
