Composting livestock mortalities

Article Abstract:

Iowa Department of Natural Resources commissioned a study to evaluate the practical feasibility, performance, environmental impacts and biosecurity of using composting for emergency disposal in case of livestock or poultry disease outbreak. Details of the study for which fifty-four tons of 1000 lb cattle carcasses were composted in 27 full-scale test units, by agricultural engineering and veterinary medicine researchers are outlined.

Latest trends in anaerobic digestion on the West Coast

Article Abstract:

The trends that have developed regarding manure digestions systems on the West Coast are presented. Manure is being biologically treated to produce methane rich biogas, which in turn is used to fuel engines coupled to generators producing electricity for farm use, including milk chilling.

Land applied biosolids restore disturbed rangelands

Article Abstract:

Rangeland restoration approach is needed to counter negative impacts of overgrazing in form of organic matter decomposition from biosolids that releases nutrients for assimilation by plants and soil microorganisms.
