Composting progress in Europe

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the technologies used and amount of materials composted in various European countries was conducted. The countries surveyed include Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Great Britain, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Spain and Greece. Materials composted in these countries are classified as biowaste consisting of municipal solid waste and household waste, greenwaste consisting of trimmings from yards and parks and pure sewage sludges which comes from municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Marketing compost in Europe

Article Abstract:

There are considerable differences between compost markets and marketing techniques in Northern and Middle European countries. However, fears that there would be problems selling the end products have not proved justified. This is the case even in countries where a large volume of compost is produced each year. The best approach to marketing is to use several different techniques at the same time, but the total marketing approach must be based on recommendations for application by the quality assurance organizations.

Continental overview: compost quality in Europe

Article Abstract:

Compost production in Europe ranges from the high quality compost obtained from strictly enforced source separation of organic waste to the lower quality compost produced from mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) processing. The former type is prevalent in countries where consumers demand compost with minimal heavy metal content. Usually, they achieve this by encouraging backyard composting.
