Controlling nuisance molds in mulches and composts

Article Abstract:

The pathogenic microorganisms which develop unwanted molds in compost mixtures can be controlled using environmental factors such as temperature and pH. Microorganisms such as artillery fungus Sphaerobolus or slime molds cause significant contamination in compost mixtures. Mulch production processes which use water at appropriate stages are normally free of harmful fungi. Processes which maintain pH values over 5.2 discourage growth of nuisance molds.

Steps to optimize odor control include mixing feedstocks thoroughly to promote uniform porosity, supplying adequate water for fostering microbial activity, applying water properly during the composting process, improving windrow passive aeration, and using biofilters where appropriate.
