Using urban organics in agriculture

Article Abstract:

The rate of acceptance and utilization of compost generated in the cities by California's farmers can be accelerated by incentives. Changes in federal farm programs have conditioned cost sharing payments and technical assistance to farmers on the voluntary use of conservation plans. The use of urban derived compost and mulch can be integrated into the conservation plans thus increasing urban compost use. Market-based incentives promoting the role of organics in soil improvement and prevention of water degradation can also be instituted.

Assessing California's organic materials management infrastructure

Article Abstract:

Research results show that even though California has a well established processing and composting infrastructure, less than one-third of the 21 mil tons of organic waste collected annually is reused, while the remainder is sent to landfill. Further research needed to identify factors that prevent higher recycling/composting levels from being achieved, such as logistics problems or geographical barriers.
