Federal court trashes Virginia trash restrictions

Article Abstract:

The US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has ruled that the state of Virginia has no authority to prevent out-of-state garbage imports into the state. The decision arose out of a lawsuit filed by Waste Management Holdings and barge companies engaged in the transportation of solid waste, which challenged three laws passed by Virginia concerning solid waste handling. The court said the laws violate the Commerce Clause of the US Constitution, which prohibits states from enacting laws that place an unfair burden on interstate commerce.

Metal Management merges Pa. operations

Article Abstract:

Metal Management has combined its Riverside and Elizabeth operations in Pennsylvania under one division, to be known as Metal Management Pittsburgh. Both facilities would remain open but will operate as a single division, and would still be engaged in the buying, processing and selling of ferrous and nonferrous metals. However, the integration will eliminate management positions and administrative costs. Metal Management is also moving in-house all its outsourced functions while transportation arrangements will be centralized.
