Landfill clause part of aviation bill

Article Abstract:

An aviation bill that was signed into law by Pres Clinton in Apr 2000, prohibits the construction of new waste recovery landfills that are located within six miles of small airports. The provision, contained in the Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century, is aimed at reducing the number of seagulls that are atracted to such landfill sites. The Federal Aviation Administration has determined that landfills present a danger to small aircraft.

Hundreds of cities and counties in California are struggling to meet a goal to cut the amount of waste landfill in the state. The volume of solid waste sent to 15 landfills in California amounts to 37 million tons per year. An average landfill in the state has the capacity to contain solid waste for another 25 years.
