The state of garbage in America

Article Abstract:

The State of Garbage in America annual survey conducted by BioCycle shows that the recycling rate in America increased to 27% in 1995. Glass, scrap metal, newsprint, corrugated cardboard and other materials are recycled. The number of material recovery facilities in 1995 was 1,289 and there were 7,375 curbside recycling programs. The growth of yard trimming composting facilities has been slow. Half of the US states support backyard composting and 22 states use direct land applications. Composting and mulching are the widely used methods for recycling.

Obstacles to recycling

Article Abstract:

Market availability for recycled products is the foremost problem regarding recycling programs. This was learned from a survey conducted across 258 US cities. The survey results were released on Dec 1992 in time for the US Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C. The next hindrances to a successful recycling program was collection costs and market prices. Three other obstacles that came out on top of the list were public participation, public education and product recyclability.

The state of garbage in America

Article Abstract:

The rate of recycling in the United States is increasing according to a nationwide annual survey conducted by Biocycle. The curbside recycling programs also exhibit impressive growth patterns. Landfilling remains a major source for burying waste but the number of landfills has been falling. New materials, better recovery rates, and improvements in markets are to achieve the recycling goals set for America in this decade.
