The challenge of yard waste composting

Article Abstract:

A ban on the dumping of yard waste on landfill sites was imposed in 1990 in Michigan. A number of composting facilities have opened up because of the ban, but since the Solid Waste Management Act exempts yard waste, no regulations regarding operations have been implemented. People have complained about the odor from the facilities, forcing government to close down several sites. Legislation that would serve as guidelines for operating standards have been tapped to solve the problem. Proper education, government identification of sites and recognition of site operators can help in solving the problem.

A new twist to mixed waste composting

Article Abstract:

Medina County, OH, built in 1991 a mixed waste processing facility in collaboration with Norton Environmental. The facility was originally intended to recover recyclables from residential and commercial wastes. Norton decided to compost some of the wastes since its contract with the county stipulated that it would be responsible for the disposal of the waste residuals. In 1994, Norton received permission from the Ohio EPA to conduct a composting pilot and in 1997, a permit to build the composting facility.

Finding profits in organics recycling

Article Abstract:

States in the US are banning the disposal of vegetation waste in landfills or incinerators. Municipal collection schemes are common but private waste haulage companies are becoming interested in composting the waste because they are already collecting it. Companies, such as Hawaiian Earth Products, get yard trimmings from private landscape companies because of difficulties acquiring sufficient domestic waste. Hawaiian Earth Products processed 1,500 tons of waste into compost each month during 1996.
